NASA has launched its Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) mission and had a successful mission after 10 months of flying in space. As the world’s first planetary defense technology demonstration, DART has successfully impacted its asteroid target completing the first attempt to move an asteroid in space. This success has officially demonstrated a viable mitigation technique for protecting the planet from an Earth-bound asteroid or comet if discovered. Now NASA will continue to optimize DART and ensure they will be successful if used in case of emergency.
