When Anika Puri, 17, went on a trip to Africa and learned that elephants were still being poached, she knew she wanted to help. She created the ElSa (short for Elephant Savior) and won the 2022 Peggy Scripps Award for Science Communication for her prototype of a machine-learning-driven software that analyzes movement patterns in thermal infrared videos of humans and elephants. With her tool that works on an iPhone, there is no longer a need for expensive high-resolution thermal cameras. This invention will hopefully save many elephants all over the world.
